THE COLUMBUS BOATING CLUB WAS FOUNDED IN 1946.  IT HAD AT ITS CORE THE DESIRE FOR FAMILIES TO ENJOY THE OUTDOORS IN THE POST WORLD WAR 11 ERA.   IT PROMOTED SAFE BOATING PRACTICES AND RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR.

AS MORE PEOPLE FOUND THE LAKES FISHING AND BOATING ATTRACTIVE, MANY SMALL SHACKS AND SUMMER HOMES STARTED TO APPEAR.  FROM THAT BEGINNING WE NOW SEE THAT THE LAKE IS A DESTINATION SPOT FOR SOME AND A PERMENATE HOME FOR MANY.  A TRIP ALONG THE SHORE WILL STILL YEILD SOME EVIDENCE OF THE FIRST SHACKS BUILT.  MOST HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY MODERN, AND IN MANY CASES, VERY EXPENSIVE HOMES.

THE PROPERTY THAT THE CLUB OCCUPIES IS LEASED FROM GEORGIA POWER ON A 15 YEAR RENEWABLE LEASE.

IN THE 1950'S THE LEASE FOR ONE YEAR WAS UNDER $100.00.  TODAY THE COLUMBUS BOATING CLUB PAYS IN EXCESS OF $7000/YEAR IN PROPERTY TAXES AND LAND LEASES.

THE EARLIEST RECORD OF YEARLY DUES IS 1N THE 1960.  IT COST A FAMILY $35.00 EACH YEAR.  THERE WERE ABOUT 40 MEMBERS.

THE GATE TO ACCESS THE POINT WAS LOCATED ON LICK SKILLET ROAD.  AS MORE FAMILIES MOVED PERMENATELY TO THE LAKE THE GATE WAS MOVED TO ITS CURRENT POSITION AT THE PROPERTIES EDGE.

OVER THE PAST 8 YEARS THE ROAD TO THE POINT HAS BEEN HANDED OVER TO HARRIS COUNTY.  IT WAS FINALLY PAVED STOPPING A RUTTED, MUDDY, WASHBOARD 1 MILE RIDE.

THE LAST ONE LANE SECTION WAS PAVED BY THE HOMEOWNERS PRIOR TO THE IMPROVED NEW TWO LAND SECTION.  ALTHOUGH THE ONE LANE SECTION IS CONSIDERED PRIVATE ALL FAMILIES  OWNING HOMES ON THIS ROAD ALLOW UNLIMITED ACCESS TO MEMBERS.  THE SPEED LIMITED IS 15 MPH AND 4 SPEED BUMPS MAKE SURE THAT IS ADHEARED TOO.

BEING THAT LAKE HARDING IS A SMALL EMPOUNDMENT COMPARED TO WEST POINT LAKE AND LAKE LANIER, ITS WATER LEVEL VARIES BY UP TO THREE FEET IN ANY GIVEN DAY.

THE AVERAGE SUMMER WATER TEMPERATURE IS IN THE LOW 80 F.

THE POINT HAS FOUR SHELTERS, THREE OF WHICH ARE 20'X20' METAL ROOFED UNITS WITH CHARCOAL GRILLS, PICNIC TABLES, CITY WATER AND ELECTRICITY. THE FOURTH SHELTER IS LOCATED IN THE WOODS AND IS  10'X10'  AND HAS A PICNIC TABLE AND GRILL.  THERE ARE RESTROOMS FOR MEN AND WOMEN WITH CITY WATER.

THE LAUNCH RAMP EXTENDS 60 FEET INTO THE LAKE AND AT THE END IS IN 7 FEET OF WATER.  PARALELL TO THIS RAMP IS A FIXED WOOD GANGWAY.

ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE POINT IS A 12'X12' FLOATING DOCK.  A FLOATING MARINA, THAT WILL IN THE FUTURE, ALLOW 8 BOATS TO MOOR SAFELY IS A WORK IN PROGRESS.
